Rublog Supplement Ideas   05 Jul 04
[print link all ]
There are a couple of additions I would like to build to support rublog:
  • It would be cool to have an edit and preview type of cgi script, so that you could update your blogs remotely. Of course you would want to restrict this via username password.
  • I also thought it would be cool to have some sort of cruise control like setup to automatically pick up changes, and just be able to check my blog entry into source control… but then i found out that RubLog supports reading from cvs source repositories anyway ;-)

Here We Go   05 Jul 04

Well, here is my first entry in my blog. I really have nothing to say, just wanted to get my feet wet. I am debating on what to start playing with in my spare time. Here are a couple of things that I am thinking about:
  • I miss messing around with Ruby. I would like to start picking it up again, and doing something useful with it. Perhaps write a simple little CruiseControl like app, that I can use to update the blog ;-)
  • I want to see how to do JSP properly, mainly to help out my wife. Guess I could learn java in the process. Also want to build some more advanced reporting for our builds at tsunami.
  • I have been doing a lot of work lately, with ant and CruiseControl. Perhaps I should officialy publish some of my modifications… or start working on some custom ant tasks.
  • I would really like to start building some useful applications to run on the hive. Also would love to have the ability to write Ruby tasks. Might be nice to make an API port for Ruby as well.

CVS is up!   05 Jul 04

I finally got frinky (my FreeBSD box that this webserver is running on) setup to run CVS with pserver This allows me to simply check my blog files into source control, and RubLog is setup to read my entries directly out of the repository.

Also got the webserver tree checked into source control. This will allow kathy an easier way to work on the website… and have revisions backed up in case we need em.

Setting up pserver really wasn’t that hard to set up. Just had to do a few google searches. My biggest gotcha was not getting inetd restart properly (and the pserver line pointed to the right repository). Next gotcha was in making sure that the passwd in the repository matched the passwd in /etc/passwd. Also had to make myself a member of the wheel group.

Waving Pain   05 Jul 04

When I am out riding, I always wave to other folks riding. I even wave to people out jogging, cutting their grass and the occassional motorist. I usually get a response, a friendly wave back, or perhaps just a nod. I laugh to myself when I am totally ignored (which happens more often that not it seams).

Anyway, when out riding yesterday, I ran into Bob (I work with Bob). He was out riding with a couple of buddies, so I hung with them for a bit. Bob blew out his front tire. No idea what caused it, but the tube was shredded around the valve stem… the blow caused my right ear to ring. I thought we were getting shot at. It was good to CO/2 work for someone.

Bob was suffering quite a bit, and I needed to get back home. I told Dennis that I was going to hammer home, and I turned around to wave bye to Bob who was a hundred yards back. As I turned around, I slammmed into a pothole… which blew out my rear tire. Sigh. I guess I shouldn’t have waved. Regardless, I got my CO/2 to work for me this time!

First Shot at using CO/2   05 Jul 04

Decided to start getting some extra miles in by communiting to work again. The weather was perfect! I even fealt pretty decent on the ride (I hardly got to ride the past couple of weeks, and fealt really weak at the Tuesday night crit).

About two miles away from work, I had my front tire blow out. I knew I should have replaced that tire. The sidewall got scraped up in that nasty crash I had in Rolla. Anyway, I think the tube poked through the sidewall, and had a bit of a problem.

I stuck a dollar bill around the part of the tire that had issues, and put a new tube in. Got the tire on there in a jiffy, and put the CO/2 cartridge in the deployer thingy ( what do you call this?? ). I screwed it down, and pushed the trigger and got nothing. Tried a couple of more times, and figured I was doing something wrong. Here is where I pulled the idiot move…

I started to unscrew it to check it out. Note to self, when doing this, all of the air shoots out the wrong end. Of course, I only had one cartridge. Fortunately I had my cell phone (i had some sandals in my bag, so worse cas I finish my workout with a long walk)… and a buddy who was on his way into work to come pick me up.

I’m not good.
