Bones   27 Feb 06
[print link all ]
So with nothing exciting to report from my rest day today (spent about half an hour in the gym, mainly just stretching and spinning), I’ll relay a short conversation I had with my 3.75 yr old Ethan this evening while trying to put him to bed. We were in the process of taking off his clothes to put his pajamas on…
  • Ethan: Daddy, are these bones in here, here, here and here (points to arms and legs)?
  • Daddy: yes, you have bones all over (i pointed at where various bones are in the fingers, arms, legs etc).
  • Ethan: Why you have so many bones?
  • Daddy: well, they are there to support your body when you do things while stand, jump and play.
  • Ethan: Does your tongue have a bone in it?
  • Daddy: No, it is a muscle.
  • Ethan: Does your penis have a bone in it? Or is it just made of squishy stuff?

Good times.

Drunks and Children   06 Jan 06

The other night Ethan wanted to dance. We played around a while dancing to his usual "1-2-3 O’clock Rock" and some of the other songs that he is used to. I usually play a lot of Ska and Rocksteady for him, since I like that style of music. His current favorite is New York Ska/Jazz Ensemble’s version of "Mouse".

Tonight he wanted something faster though, so I played some Operation Ivy for him (which he loves now BTW), then I busted out some old school Mighty Mighty Bosstones. This pic was taken while we were skankin around the room during the song "Drunks and Children".

Christmas Show   21 Dec 05

Ethan had a little Christmas production at his preschool today. Little 3 year olds singing Christmas songs. With Ethan being out of school for a week and a half due to illness, he was a bit out of practice. No worries, he stood on the top row, and as everyone began to sing… he took a seat.

He stood up for the next song, and started doing whatever hand motions they are supposed to do… and then he decided to turn around and do the hand motions with his back towards us. The next song he actually sang and did the hand motions. I guess that got to the songs he was able to practice in the preceeding weeks.

All was well, and the kids came down the stairs… except Ethan somehow missed a step and took a header. His teacher picked him up as he was screaming and blood was shooting out of his mouth like some B-movie horror flick. I pretty much assumed he busted his teeth out, but fortunately he just bit his lower lip, and cut his upper gum. Poor little guy, he has had a rough go with his mouth these past couple of weeks. Anyway, within 20 minutes he was drinking lemonade and eating cookies. Kids heal quick.

Us old guys on the other hand… I started the new plan today. I was able to do 50 minutes on the trainer with a half a dozen 30 second long seated sprints. These things are short, but put you through some sort of torture. It feels good to be training again.

I was tempted to do that ride outside today, as the sprints are better to do on the road (mainly for that initial acceleration as the inertial loads are more road like on the uhhh… road). The trainer won out though, mainly because I didn’t wanna freak my lungs out with hard efforts and some serious cold. I suspect I would still be coughing right now. Not too mention that I needed to get to work, and just getting dressed to ride outside would have added an extra half hour onto the workout time.

Sick Ick   31 Oct 05

Two days of the kid being sick. Lesson learned is this. It only takes about 20 minutes for a 3 and half year old to make cheese from about a cup and a half of milk and a little tummy virus. Poor guy has yet to learn to aim into the toilet when vomiting. I guess it is hard to aim there when you are sitting on it due to other tummy issues. Poor guy, and poor us.

Not too mention that the wife is a wee bit sensitive to the smell of such things. Yesterday, the boy tosses his newly made cheese, and it took about a minute and a half for the mom to be to make a bit of a mess. Not a fun spectator sport, but I had front row seats for the whole thing.

My Bad   29 Sep 05

I was in a bit of a hurry this morning. I needed to drop ethan off at the in-laws before I hit work, and I really didn’t want to get stuck in more traffic than necessary. There is a certain lack of sleep in me as well, so some slack will need to be cut for what happened this morning.

My boy needed to pee. Well, he didn’t want to pee, but heck, the kid just woke up, his pull-ups were dry, and he was about to sit in a car for at least a half an hour. So, he needed to pee. He was tired too, so I figured he would rather sit than stand, so, I went through most of the go pee ritual. I lifted the seat, I pulled his little stool up to the toilet so he could climb up there, and sit down. I moved the plant over the air vent (he doesn’t like the air kicking on and blowing on him when he is doing his business). I helped him take his pants off, and started pulling them right side out, and let him go about thing.

Wahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. WTF? Why is this kid crying. I turn around to see mostly feet and head. Ooops, my bad. I forgot to put his little toilet seat on top of the toilet. The boy stepped up onto his step, turned around and sat down… and plopped right inside the bowl. Of course, he cried for minutes… and I am still laughing.
